Tart as a Granny Smith,
Juicy as a Jonathon,
Humble as apple pie,
Delicious apple of my eye.
Jealously green or blushing red,
its hard and shiny skin
bites crisply to reveal the
taste of sweet white flesh within.
Send an apple to your teacher
it’s the bane of ignorance.
A fitting homage
to the tree of knowledge.

So long ago, when just a child
I lay asleeping in your arms,
my heart was caught but fiercely wild
and passionately naked.
While you were proud, I of your pride
paced the confines of desire and
dreamed your arms would open wide
and share your freedom.
I was always hopeful still,
I was young and arrogant,
I thought I’d change the world at will

I wanted to write a poem that shone from the page
Like roof tiles in midsummer midday sun.
I wanted it to be dry heat catching in your lungs
While sweat runnels under arms whose skin is cool to touch.
I wanted you to see the harbour in the heat of the day
