When you were very tiny
I was content to lie
curled around you,
watching you breathe,
wondering at it,
worrying whether you were still
when you were too still.
Before I grew tired of that
you were trying out your first smile,
holding your head up from the bed
showing the first signs of curiosity.

rolling around the floor
