SENTIMENTAL VALUE.

Participating partners in complicity
create a contract where two figures meet
on a balance sheet, swapping receipts
for interest and intercourse
While negotiating a turnover of assets.
An unwritten self-preservation reservation
is a mandatory obligation to appreciate -
contingent on beneficial depreciation
for saving face.
Gambling on curiosity overextends
credit on credibility
not to mention credulity
with no guarantees of reciprocity.
Is honesty a saving grace ?
Deposit a [...]

EVESBANE

Tart as a Granny Smith,
Juicy as a Jonathon,
Humble as apple pie,
Delicious apple of my eye.
Jealously green or blushing red,
its hard and shiny skin
bites crisply to reveal the
taste of sweet white flesh within.
Send an apple to your teacher
it’s the bane of ignorance.
A fitting homage
to the tree of knowledge.
Poor Snow White who took one bite
and froze into [...]

WISDOM’S LIBERTY.

So long ago, when just a child
I lay asleeping in your arms,
my heart was caught but fiercely wild
and passionately naked.
While you were proud, I of your pride
paced the confines of desire and
dreamed your arms would open wide
and share your freedom.
I was always hopeful still,
I was young and arrogant,
I thought I’d change the world at will
and [...]

I WANTED

I wanted to write a poem that shone from the page
Like roof tiles in midsummer midday sun.
I wanted it to be dry heat catching in your lungs
While sweat runnels under arms whose skin is cool to touch.
I wanted you to see the harbour in the heat of the day
With water that glitters far brighter than [...]

Feeling Guilty About Thinking

…and when I say that love is something you feel
not something you give and that
when you give, you are actually taking……
you do not frown and argue with me
you do not think in clichés.
…and when I say that guilt is something you choose
to suffer, not something inflicted by them
and only you can accept or alter accordingly…
you [...]

Beads

The man in the dark glasses said “hello!’
claiming my time, claiming aquaintance.
He, who was a stranger only seconds ago,
then the past swirled up to greet him
with a wry smile at the sour mistake
of our last goodbye, which broadened
at the memory of our last true laughter
and softened to see this souvenir of the sweet
tingle tangle of [...]

August – Shelly Beach WA

Hopping and swearing and catching breath
in the ankle numbing cold
of half a foot of shallow blue.
Squinting at the bright bleached beach
sharp soled on tiny broken shells.
Grit eyed and brown skinned we bathed
in that shivering liquid salt
scrubbing and gargling like natives.
The half sphere sky cupped us in blue,
the still ocean, striped half a mile out
shelving into [...]

Body Language

A tongue in politeness with silence is bound
but a lot can be said by the angle of the head.
A mouth shall speak without making a sound
and eyes express meanings when words are unfound.
Think not because it wasn’t spoken out loud
that it wasn’t heard as clear as sound.

A Bead

I should no longer rhapsodise about my ex-lover
although I fell in love with the delivery boy
for all of five minutes because his skin
was dark and smooth and smelled rich and sweet
like his skin used to, the morning after a night of love.
And I looked with fondness at a boy whose cough
reverberated in his chest like [...]

Dreams

Dreams are what you make of them.
They entertain your sleep,
Most of them will fade away
Though some will make you weep.
But the only dreams that matter
Are the ones you make and keep
The ones that light your waking hours
And bully you to leap.
We had a dream, imagine, as some other dreamer did
That all the wars are over [...]

Freedom of choice

I chose this life.
I found this place we live in.
I asked for the job I work at.
I created these things around me.
I made friends of the people I care about.
No one did it for me.
No one else made decisions about my options.
I chose this life.
By the freedom of my actions it is rich.
Though by the [...]
